A friend once shared with me these wise words, do something good for yourself every day, every week, every month, every year. Like they say during pre-flight announcements, put your own oxygen mask on first, before helping those around you. The same applies to life, you need to feel healthy, strong and nourished in order to be able to give your best to your family, friends, job etc. Not making yourself and your wellbeing a priority, can leave you feeling rundown, empty, and irritable, with not a lot to offer anyone. You can’t give away, what you don’t have. So it’ makes sense that only when you take care of and love YOU, can you truly take care of and love others.
In our fast paced lives, it’s easy to neglect simple things that recharge our body, mind and spirit; however doing these things will help us be better prepared for life’s stressors. I’m sure you’re thinking, but where do I find the time to do this? Start by setting aside a few minutes throughout your day to do things that relax you, bring you joy, or make you feel good. For example, take five minutes when you wake up to take a few deep breaths, and reflect on all of the things that you’re grateful for. Take another five minutes to take a walk outside after lunch, and try not to focus on work, just enjoy getting in some healthy movement, fresh air, and sunshine. Take another five minutes for a calming cup of tea after dinner, to prep you for some relaxing sleep.
This only adds up to fifteen minutes out of the 1,440 that there are in the day, you deserve at least that much right?! You’ll be surprised how these few minutes dedicated to only you, will help you to feel recharged. Regular self-care can reduce stress, improve focus, increase energy and lead to a happier outlook on life. I challenge you to create your own self-care plan that will help you to replenish your gas tank on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
